As the laps wound down at Homestead-Miami Speedway, a four-way dogfight for the lead turned into chaos.
Last week’s winner Corey Heim looked to be proving himself as a future star in the sport, holding off Layne Riggs and Cup champion Kyle Larson. Heim, who swept the first two stages, was out front with only four laps to go.
Then the NASCAR gods threw a sucker punch as Heim’s truck lost power and faded back into the field and ultimately finished third. Riggs assumed the lead with one of the most talented drivers in oval racing chasing behind.
Larson dug deep and got to Riggs and, with more success than his attempt 44 laps earlier, passed the young gun for the lead. Larson took home the checkered, completing the first step in his monumental challenge to win all three races this week.
The only driver to ever complete such a feat was Kyle Busch at Bristol, twice, but with Larson’s talent and Hendrick’s backing this race could have been the start of history.
If so, this was a race well-deserved to find its way into the history books. This was classic Homestead with the fastest drivers ripping the wall or sending it on the bottom with thrilling slide jobs.
Initially, it looked like the field was going to make it easy on Larson, who after a restart on lap six, jumped out to a comfortable lead. Little by little, Heim reeled him in and took the stage win away from Larson.
Heim cruised to an easier win in the following stage, fighting off Ty Majeski and extending his lead to over a second at one point. Heim led 78 laps in total and became the first driver to win consecutive stages in this Truck season.
The first two stages were action packed, but the third stage ramped the action. Early on, Cup Series regular Ross Chastain surged to the lead while Heim, Riggs and Larson battled behind him.
As he did in the first stage Heim was reeling in Chastain when Larson spun attempting to pass Riggs with 45 laps to go. On the ensuing restart, Heim dove into turn one securing the lead and running away with it.
Heim led until he lost the power in his truck, despite this his performance was certainly impressive and was on track for his third win in five races.
The Truck Series returns at Martinsville next Friday at 4:30 p.m.
