The winningest driver in Craftsman Truck Series history added another tally to his record thanks to a photo finish on Saturday.
Piloting the Gainbridge #7 for Spire Motorsports, Kyle Busch dissected the field in route to his 67th victory in the series. Busch crossed the line side by side with Truck Series staple Stewart Friesen, but thanks to a craft side draft out of turn four, Busch won by 0.017 seconds.
The first two stages of the Fr8 208 mainly consisted of a train in the top lane dominating the field. It didn’t matter who was at the front, the consistent draft from the top line of cars cruised by anyone who dared take their truck to the bottom.
While the majority of the race was spent this way, with passing at a minimum, that doesn’t mean there was no intrigue. The rough surface of Atlanta and mixed levels of experience in the field kept things somewhat interesting until the drivers needed to make something happen.
The first of such instances was near the end of Stage one when Jack Wood went to the bottom to finally try and pass pole sitter Connor Mosack. As the duo crossed the start finish line, Layne Riggs took a huge run to make it three-wide going into turn one.
Somehow they negotiated that and didn’t wreck as Wood took home the first stage. While Riggs was able to pull off that move, a penalty and an engine issue all but ended his day, finishing 20th.
Most drivers would pit after the end of the first stage, except for three, giving Busch prime track position to take control of the race. He did just that, leading the bottom line until he slid up above Mosack for a lead he would not relinquish.
Another driver who stayed out, Corey Heim, ran out of gas with two laps to go, but luckily did not bring out the caution and Busch took home the second stage.
Stage three brought out the best racing the Truck Series has produced all season, Busch continued to find his way forward after losing spots on pit road using help from a Spire teammate Rajah Caruth to get there.
Caruth’s journey to the front didn’t last long as at the exit of turn four his truck snapped right, sending him into the outside wall and causing the largest caution of the day.
According to Jeff Gluck, Busch had complained about debris on the track prior to this, but it’s unclear what happened to Caurth’s truck. Either way, this wreck brought out a lengthy red flag for clean up.
Once they were back racing, the top line train formed again until a three-wide racing incident ended Frankie Muniz’s day and stacked the field up again with 26 laps to go.
At this point it became clear that it was going to come down to who could outsmart Busch, who had continued to lead despite valiant attempts from the bottom lane to get by him.
A new challenger appeared after 10 laps of intense racing, Grant Enfinger. He worked to stack up the bottom lane and was the first driver to match Busch’s speed into the corner.
While the two battled, Busch debuted a dive bomb slide job move where he would fully send his truck into the corner and slide up to lead the top lane. This move proved unstoppable as everytime Enfinger would pass him in the corner, Busch came screaming back to lead the race.
Enfinger’s run wouldn’t last though and at least two more challengers fell victim to Busch’s signature move, shuffling them back to the back.
Eventually coming to the checkered flag it was Friesen and Busch side by side, with Busch finding his way back to victory lane for the first time since Atlanta’s Truck Series race last year.
Another superspeedway race and a Buschwacking winner means the mystery of this field continues. Every driver has had a chance to run up front, but the intermediates and short tracks will tell the real story of this season.
Rookie Gio Ruggerio continues to impress, finding himself near the front late in these races, but hasn’t been able to close the deal. He finished 12th at Atlanta.
Ben Rhodes’ Thorsport truck looked great again, but the shuffling at the end of the race knocked him out of contention, eventually finishing 7th.
The Truck Series takes a two-week long break before they return at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 14 at 6:00 p.m. PST.
